I can’t agree more with Mœbius more as far as the lettering in a comic being an essential part of the look of a page. Most of my favorite artists at least draw the wordballoons into the art, if not letter the page themselves. One of the things that keeps me in love with the medium is that it’s a visual way of telling stories that can be entirely in a single person’s hand (I’d say something about the magic of a sketchbook comic, of building a little machine in the middle of a blank page to tell a story, but that’s a bigger thought than I’m awake for).
While I respect the skill in ‘invisible’ lettering, reading a comic where the artist is presenting not only the pictures but also the words grounds me in their story like nothing else. I can’t imagine a Mœbius story, or Pope, or Dalrymple, or Graham, where they aren’t responsible for every mark on the page. It’s just another characteristic of the storyteller’s voice, something that we’ve lost since they’ve transitioned from being spoken to being written down.
